The burning of a bayberry candle on Christmas Eve and New Year’s has become a tradition for some. Believed to have been started with early Colonists, candles were made of actual bayberries, due to the greenish-white wax around the bayberry fruit. The wax was believed to have special health benefits and burning a bayberry candle, made of actual bayberries, was believed to give good fortune for the following year.
“A bayberry candle burned to the socket, will bring joy to the heart and gold to the pocket.”
Some Christians believed that the light of a bayberry candle on Christmas Eve welcomed Christ into their home. A legend states that the Bay Tree sheltered the holy family during a storm and as result will always be safe from lightning.
I am sharing my bayberry candle with everyone to wish you best of health, good fortune, love, luck and miracles! Be well and have a Great 2014!
